I’m positive the best change I’ve made was getting mental health care.

Describe one positive change you have made in your life.

Hello Humans,

I think the most positive change I’ve made in my life was seeking help for my mental health. I struggled with depression, anxiety, paranoia, binge eating, and panic attacks for years before I felt comfortable reaching out to even my family for help.

Eventually I went to see a psychiatrist, then another, then a third. I wrote all three off as useless idiots. One guy after one meeting, the other guys I gave at least a few months before I gave up on them too and stopped looking. After a couple of years one of my friends convinced me to give her therapist a shot and he was great. He got me to a place where I was willing to see one of the psychiatrists he worked with.

I was skeptical when I met her, but I finally made a connection. I feel like actually listened to me and understood me. We made a loose of symptoms and got to work treating them along with continued therapy.

I felt a little better pretty quickly and kept improving as we fine tuned the combination of medications I was on. Turns out a lot of problems can be caused by untreated ADHD, bipolar 1 disorder and OCD, most of my issues seem to be symptoms of one of those.

Looking back now it’s like I went colorblind and suddenly I started to see color again. I feel like a different person. It’s a little scary how sometimes I miss the depression, you get comfortable with the heaviness after a while and the cold feeling. But a couple of days off my meds and I remember why I started them in the first place.

I still have the Anxiety, but it’s more manageable now. My mental health journey isn’t over yet, it might never be over, I like going to therapy and bouncing my thoughts after a trained professional who legally can’t tell people what I’ve talked about. I drive almost 4 hours to see my psychiatrist every three months to see if we need to make any changes and she’s absolutely worth it in my opinion.
